The casement window is one of our favorites because of its versatility and its ventilation—it might even be the secret superhero of the Acclaim™ product lineup.

Our casement windows can be configured to open to the left or the right, giving you flexibility in how you use your space. And, because they open so fully—with the sash almost perpendicular to the frame—you are easily able to clean both sides of them from inside the house. And because the screens are on the interior, you are also able to put them in and take them out from inside your home, as well. (Making putting the screens in for the summer a great rainy day chore!)

That big wide opening and outward facing sash also mean that casements can catch a breeze from any direction. Casements provide the most ventilation of all of our operational windows.

Casement windows are also excellent choices for locations like behind the sink, where you might want to fully open a window, but have a difficult reach.

They’re also great for tight spaces: Because the sash cranks out, it means they available in sizes that can meet egress requirements^* with a smaller wall opening than other window styles might need — making them a great option for basements!

Yes! Absolutely. Next to double-hung, they are our most popular style, probably because of their versatility, energy efficiency, and big views with maximal ventilation.

We see many of our homeowners pairing casements with other styles, such as flanking a giant picture window or included in a bay or bow configuration. As we mentioned, they are also frequently placed above/behind sinks or in stairwells or other places where ventilation is a bonus—but opening the window might require a reach.

Renewal by Andersen does two types of casement window replacement (in most locations): full-frame or insert.

Insert replacement, also known as retrofitting, involves the removal of the existing sash and glass while leaving the existing frame intact. The new window is then installed into the existing frame.

Full-frame replacement involves the complete removal of the window frame and sash and the installation of a new frame and sash. This method is often used in cases where the existing frame is severely damaged or the homeowner wants to change the window's size, shape, or style.

When deciding between full-frame casement window replacement and insert casement window replacement, it's important to consider the pros and cons of each method, and your specific needs and budget. Because not every situation can use either method, consulting a professional when you’re thinking about replacement is an excellent first step.

We cannot replace just the sash of another type of window with an Acclaim casement sash. The sash and frame need to be installed together in order to seal properly.

Well, while we think that the casement window is pretty darn great…there’s no one perfect window for every single home and every single situation. 

Depending on the size of the opening in your home, you may not be able to use a casement. The strength of our Fibrex® composite material means we can make some pretty big windows, in a lot of styles, but because a casement window cranks out up to 90 degrees, the frame needs to be able to support that sash weight at that angle. (Even so, we’ve seen some very large casements!)

Because they crank outward, depending on your overhang and their orientation, the interior of the sash of a casement could be more exposed to the elements than, say, a double-hung window. Fibrex® material is exceptionally strong, low-maintenance, and holds up great in every climate, so this is not likely to be an issue — but even so, if you live somewhere you may have your windows cranked wide-open year round, you might want to consider an alternative style.

Also because they open outward, they are not the best choice for high-traffic exterior spaces, such as patios or walkways. An alternative to consider is window that does not open out into the space, such as a double-hung window.

For a similar look, but even more ventilation, casement windows can be customized with grille patterns to simulate the look of a double-hung window, which is a great if you have to meet certain requirements for historical accuracy. If you like the space saving aspect of a double-hung, a great alternative are gliding (or sliding) windows, which also do not protrude into a room (they slide on the horizontal plane, as opposed to the double-hung window's vertical plane of operation).
