How do I know if I need to replace my patio doors?
Is your patio door doing its job—keeping the elements out, providing easy access, and looking great—or is it showing signs of wear and tear? Maybe it’s time to consider an upgrade that improves both functionality and style. Here are some signs to look out for if you are wondering if it's time for a replacement patio door.
Performance Issues: If your door is sticking, doesn’t slide smoothly, or no longer closes securely, those could be signs of wear and tear. Drafts, difficulty locking, or damaged weather seals are other signs that it's time for a replacement.
Aesthetic Concerns: An outdated patio door can detract from your home’s appearance. Whether it’s faded or simply doesn’t match your home’s modern design, a replacement could restore both beauty and consistency.
Visible Damage: Look for visual signs of aging like rot, warping, or cracking around the frame. Damaged glass or worn-out weather seals can also point to the need for a new door.
Recognizing these signs early can save you from higher energy bills and future maintenance costs.
What are the A-Series replacement patio doors made out of?
Andersen® A-Series replacement patio doors feature:
- Frames with a wood core and a fiberglass exterior. This construction produces a rigid frame and a low-maintenance, durable exterior.
- A one-piece fiberglass sill design that provides superior water management. The nonconductive fiberglass construction enhances energy performance.
- Door panel stiles and rails constructed of an engineered Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) core to provide strength and help prevent warping, allowing for consistent, smooth operation.
- Panel interiors constructed from premium wood veneer and available in pine, maple, vertical grain Douglas fir, oak, mahogany* and cherry. Prefinished interiors use water-based paints and stains.
- Panel exteriors protected with a Flexacron® paint system electrostatically applied to penetrate all exterior surfaces for maximum protection and a lustrous, low-maintenance finish.
*Actual wood species is either Sapele or Sipo, both non-endangered species grown in Africa, with color and characteristics similar to Central American mahoganies.
What’s the difference between the A-Series contemporary panel style and the A-Series traditional (or Frenchwood®) style?
We’re glad you asked! We’re biased, but we love the look of the A-Series contemporary door…it really is the best of both worlds. This patio door gives you a modern look and styling, but with all of the premium features you’d expect from our top-of-the-line patio door. Of course, we DO still love our traditional panel style, as well—it’s just a different aesthetic.
So, what’s the difference in “technical” terms?
The A-Series traditional panels feature 5 5⁄8” stiles and top rail with a 10 1⁄2” bottom rail and traditional glass stops. (A stop is small, decorative molding piece used to secure glass panes in doors or windows.)
Contemporary panels feature 5 5⁄8” stiles and top rail with a 6 1⁄4” bottom rail and contemporary glass stops.
In short, the vertical side pieces and top and bottom horizontal pieces are narrower in the contemporary panel style, meaning you have more glass area—giving you that sleek, modern look.
Functionally, though, they are identical!
Wait! What are "rails" and "stiles" in a replacement patio door?
When you look at a patio door, the door panel appears to be made of two horizontal boards, and two vertical ones. Stiles are the vertical pieces that hold the glass (and also where the door hardware is); rails are the horizontal pieces at the top and bottom that connect the stiles.

What’s the difference between a French-door patio door and a sliding glass patio door?
Many people think that a French door refers to the style of grilles on the door—typically Colonial or equal lite grilles, both of which can feature numerous “lites” (the squares or rectangles created by the grilles).
In reality, what defines a French door is the operation of the doors—not the appearance. French doors have hinges on the side and swing open either to the home’s interior (inswing) or toward the exterior (outswing).
Conversely, a sliding (or gliding) patio door does not swing at all… it slides on a track and requires no additional floor space to operate.
One of the reasons the A-Series replacement patio door is so popular is because of all of the options you have to customize your door—so if you love the look of a “traditional” French door, but need to save space, consider using a sliding patio door, but leverage grille options to recreate that traditional many-lite look.
Another visual difference between our sliding and hinged versions, is the hardware differs between the two patio door configurations—they have many of the same hardware styles (for example, both the sliding and the hinged versions have Newbury as an option), however the function and look is different. A hinged replacement patio door has lever-type handles; a sliding replacement patio door will have a “C”-shaped handle for pulling the door on its track.
Another difference is in the locks: while both sliding and hinged patio doors can be equipped with a six-pin cylinder lock for external keyed entry, only the sliding version can take a footlock. This optional lock allows the door to be locked in a partially open position for ventilation. A-Series hinged versions can be upgraded with a Yale® smartlock.
One final major difference between sliding patio doors and hinged is panel configuration. By necessity, a sliding glass patio door will always have a minimum of two panels. The hinged version can have just a single panel to operate.
What are the advantages to a sliding glass door? Where do sliding glass doors work the best?
Because it slides on a track, a sliding glass door is, by necessity, two panels. We LOVE all the light that comes in and the big views—so, major plus there! That makes them great additions to rooms where you want beautiful views and loads of light, such as family rooms and kitchens.
Another advantage is the space savings…like their “cousin” in the window family, the sliding or gliding window, a sliding patio door does not protrude into the space (interior or exterior) and is a great option for walkways, narrow rooms, or places where you may want furnishings nearby.
Finally, another security option for our sliding glass doors is an auxillary footlock. The footlock provides an extra measure of security when the door is in a locked position. The lock can be set so the door is fully closed or partially open to provide a secure venting position and is available in all hardware finishes.
What are the advantages to a French door (hinged door) for a replacement patio door? Where does a French patio door work the best?
The A-Series replacement patio door can be configured to open either inward or outward, depending on your needs.
And with double-hinged patio doors, where the hinges are on the outside and the door handles are at the center, opening both doors means there’s a markedly wider opening, which can have many benefits, including offering superior airflow.
Hinged patio doors are also secure. Andersen A-Series hinged patio doors are made of durable materials and come with a five-point locking system for peace of mind.
Hinged patio doors work well where you can open the doors fully and not obstruct a walkway or come into contact with furniture. The ability to select inswing or outswing with an A-Series patio door means they can work well in most places. Need space for a dining room table or a bed? Choose an outswing model. Want to have your grill and patio furniture right outside the door? Go with an inswing so the door does not interfere with items on your deck.
Are A-series patio doors energy efficient?
Just like when we talk about windows, when we talk about the energy efficiency of patio doors, we have to consider the whole picture—from the frame to the glass to the installation.
A properly installed replacement patio door can help you save money on your energy bills. We offer configurations for ENERGY STAR® certified doors for most climate zones across the country—discuss which glass options fit the bill for your area with your design consultant.
The Andersen® A-Series doors we carry and install offer a wide variety of glass options to suit most every climate zone, including dual- and triple-pane options, and numerous coating types for cold climates, warm sunny climates, and everything in between. Learn more about the benefits of our available glass options here.
A-Series doors can be configured to meet ENERGY STAR® Certification in most areas; and select configurations and zones have been named ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient for 2025.
And of course, installation is paramount. The best windows and doors will not perform if they are not installed correctly and professionally. Improperly installed product can lead to damage of your home and door, as well as gaps, air infiltration, and more. At Renewal by Andersen, we know the right way to install every product we sell, in every part of the country and within a wide variety of unique home construction styles—and of course we warrant our products AND our installation.
ENERGY STAR is a registered trademark of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. See website for specific configuration details.
Are there different glass options available for A-Series replacement patio doors?

Can I get screens for my patio doors?
Absolutely. There are several options for insect screens, depending on the style of door you have.
All insect screens have a long-lasting* fiberglass screen mesh and are color matched to the exterior of the door, unless otherwise specified.
Screen configurations include:
Top-Hung Gliding/Gliding Insect Screens
For: sliding patio doors; hinged inswing patio doors
Patented square corner joints add considerable strength to the frame members. Available in premium top-hung and conventional gliding designs.
The premium top-hung insect screen has silicone-embedded glide hooks that hang from the top of the screen track, allowing it to glide smoothly and effortlessly without the interference of dust and debris. Alignment rollers on the bottom keep it in place on the track, while the perimeter bug seal helps ensure insects stay out.
The conventional insect screen has bottom rollers with self-contained leveling adjusters.
Hinged Insect Screen
For: hinged inswing doors. Available for single-panel doors.
Double-Hinged Insect Screen
For: hinged inswing patio doors. Available for two-panel jamb-hinged doors.
Retractable Insect Screen
For: sliding patio doors
The retractable insect screen is installed on the exterior of the door and opens side to side across the width of the opening. When the insect screen is not in use, it neatly retracts into a small canister mounted on the exterior of the door. Available for two-panel doors.
Retractable Insect Screen
For: hinged outswing patio doors
The retractable insect screen is installed on the interior of the door across the width of the opening. When the insect screen is not in use, it neatly retracts into a small canister mounted on each side of the door.
Retractable insect screens for hinged outswing doors are available for single-panel and two-panel doors, and in white, gold dust, pine, maple and oak finishes and six stain options to match the interior of the door.

Can I get blinds between the glass with an A-Series patio door? Are blinds between the glass worth it?
The A-Series replacement patio door has blinds between the glass in a wide variety of configurations. Blinds between the glass are available for select door sizes when ordered with Low-E4® tempered glass and any exterior or interior color. Choose between white or slate gray aluminum blinds for your door.
Are blinds between the glass worth it? That depends on you and your home! If there is a lot of direct sunlight coming in your door or you have privacy concerns and find yourself frequently needing to raise and lower your blinds, between-the-glass options make a lot of sense.
Plus, with this option, there are no cords hanging down or the actual blinds hanging down for pets or small children to be tempted by—or to collect dust, dirt, pollen, grime, etc.
And cleaning is much easier than with traditional blinds—you’ll never need to move them to clean your windows, and you’ll never need to dust them or otherwise clean them!
Are the A-Series replacement patio doors secure?
All of our patio doors feature tempered glass, as well as the unique Andersen® reachout locking system that pulls the door panel snugly into the jamb for weathertightness and enhanced security.
For additional peace of mind, consider adding a six-pin key cylinder lock (available in hardware-coordinating styles and finishes). This lock allows the gliding door to be locked and unlocked from the exterior.
Hinged A-Series doors can also upgrade their locks to Yale® Assure Lock® Keyless Lock, which allows you to monitor, lock, and unlock from anywhere with Bluetooth® technology for key-free unlocking and is compatible with Z-Wave® for integration with a wide range of smart home platforms.
Another security option for our sliding patio doors is an auxillary footlock. The footlock provides an extra measure of security when the door is in a locked position. The lock can be set so the door is fully closed or partially open to provide a secure venting position and is available in all hardware finishes.
Finally, select A-Series configurations are available with Stormwatch®: a PG upgrade featuring heavy-duty rollers and reinforced frame and panel components to allow standard glass units to achieve higher performance ratings. Andersen® patio door products with Stormwatch® protection are designed and tested to meet the tough building code requirements* in coastal areas.
A-Series products with Stormwatch® protection feature exterior composite materials that withstand corrosive coastal conditions while providing classic architectural styles.
*Tested to AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101 I.S.2/A440-08. Performance values vary by product line. View Product Performance Data at Andersen Windows. See your local code official for building code requirements in your area.
