What is an Acclaim® specialty window?
Specialty windows are a specific type of picture window. Like our traditional picture windows, specialty windows are stationary/fixed and inoperable, meaning they do not open.
Unlike a traditional picture window, however, specialty windows come in a wide variety of shapes. Circle Top and Circle windows, Hexagon, Trapezoid, and Springline windows are all examples of popular specialty window shapes. Renewal by Andersen also offers the option to work with your design consultant to create a custom shape.
What are the advantages to a specialty window?
Because specialty windows are a type of picture window, they share many of the same advantages—with a little bit of added architectural flair!
- Energy efficiency. Like picture windows, they are stationary windows and are our most energy-efficient window style. Their non-operable nature means they are fully sealed, so there’s no opportunity for air infiltration. And, of course, with Fibrex® composite material’s low thermal transmittance (700 times less than aluminum), they are well-insulated. You can further configure them with glass options to make them even more efficient.
- Big views. Specialty windows excel at bringing in expansive views and large amounts of light, and are especially popular for places where you aren’t needing to open or close a window anyway, such as high walls, stairwells, above other windows and doors. They can frequently be found at the top of window walls—either in a combination of shapes, or a mix of specialty and traditional picture windows. Specialty windows also pair with operable windows, such as casements/awnings, or double-hung windows, to get the ventilation in addition to the views.

- Creativity. Sometimes, the advantages are intangible—like getting a chance to let your creativity shine through (along with all that sunlight!). Why look like every other house when you can have a dramatic window wall topped with trapezoids, a series of right triangle windows lighting up a stairwell, or a beautiful circle framing an expansive backyard view.
What are some popular specialty replacement window shapes that Renewal by Andersen can make?
There are 15 standard, base shapes. Add in custom, and the sky is almost the limit!
The base shapes are: Chord window, Circle window, Quarter Circle window, Circle Top window, Springline window, Half Springline window, Equal Leg Arch window, Unequal Leg Arch window, Triangle window, Right Triangle window, Trapezoid window, Peak Pentagon window, Pentagon window, Hexagon window, and Octagon window.
What is the difference between a Chord window, a Circle Top window, and a Springline window shape?
Great question! The relationship between Circle Top, Chord, and Springline specialty window shapes is unique. They all look similar, but are different—and can take different grille patterns—so the distinction can be important.
The key is in their heights.
- A Chord (less than a half circle) has a height less than half its width.
- A Circle Top is exactly half of a circle, but can also include up to 4" of straight sides at the bottom.
- A Springline is similar to a Circle Top, where the curved part is a full half circle, but the sides must be longer than 4”.
Your design consultant will be able to walk through all of the types with you if you’d like more information.
