How can I reduce the condensation that forms on my window/patio door glass panes?
The answer varies, depending upon whether the condensation is on the exterior pane, the interior pane or between the panes.
EXTERIOR PANE
Condensation on the outside of your windows or patio doors may occur during spring and in the fall, usually when cool nights follow a warm day. It is a result of moisture in the air exceeding certain limits and the temperature of the glass falling below the dew point in the air. Condensation on the exterior glass panes is a natural phenomenon, especially for energy-efficient High-PerformanceTM insulating glass, which restricts the airflow between the panes of glass. This condensation will evaporate once the day warms. To receive a brochure about this topic, please contact your local Renewal by Andersen dealer.
INTERIOR PANE (on the edges or entire pane)
Condensation on the inside of your windows is a result of too much moisture in the air of your home. This condition is common in winter. Humidity levels in your home during the winter months should not exceed 30-35%. As the outside temperature decreases, your indoor humidity levels need to be reduced.
| To maintain these levels in your home, you may want to: |
|
 |
Check your venting |
 |
Purchase a hygrometer (humidity tester) |
 |
Use a dehumidifier to remove moisture |
|
Turn your humidifier on furnace down or off |
 |
Turn on exhaust fans during showers |
 |
Allow ceiling fans to run and circulate the air |
 |
Modify drapes and other window coverings that can contribute to condensation issues |
 |
Avoid storing firewood in your house |
 |
Install a fresh air intake |
For more information about condensation, your local Renewal by Andersen retailer will be happy to send you information on this subject, or you may want to reference these websites: www.nfrc.org www.eeba.org
OVAL IN THE CENTER
An oval condensation ring on the interior glass surface is an indicator that interior and exterior panes of glass have collapsed toward each other. You will need to contact your local Renewal by Andersen retailer for replacement.
BETWEEN THE PANES
When the seals along the outer perimeter of glass fail and allow moisture to penetrate the space between panes of insulated glass, your window or door will appear cloudy or fogged. Please check and make sure the glass does not have chemicals or pollutants on the outside surface. Once you confirm that the condensation is between the panes, you will need to contact your local Renewal by Andersen retailer for potential replacement.

How do I clean my window/patio door glass?
Renewal by Andersen® products come standard with High-Performance™ Low-E4® glass. This glass has a low-maintenance exterior coating and protective film on both the interior and exterior glass surfaces to help protect against mortar, dirt and dust during shipping and installation. To clean the glass, first wipe loose dirt and grime from the glass with a soft dry cloth. Apply a cleaning solution such as mild soapy water, vinegar and water, or a liquid window cleaner to the glass and wipe in a circular motion. Remove the cleaning solution with a squeegee or a clean, lint-free cloth. Rinse with clear water if soap has been used. Note: Never use abrasive solutions or razor blades in order to avoid damage to the glass.

What is the best method for removing residue or other stubborn materials from glass?
There are a few recommended products and procedures for cleaning stubborn materials from glass.
IMPORTANT: Do not clean glass while it is exposed to direct sunlight.
Cleaning with soap and mineral spirits:
1. Apply mild soap, mild detergent, LEPTYNE® solvent, mineral spirits or naphtha solvents to glass either by spraying or using a clean, grit-free cloth or sponge saturated with cleaning solution.
CAUTION: When using solvents, do not use too much solvent. Damage to the glazing or insulating unit seals can occur.
After cleaning the glass with solvents or mineral spirits, immediately clean the frame with soap and water to prevent staining. Follow solvent manufacturer's directions on label for toxicity, handling and flammability warnings.
2. Wipe the cleaning solutions on the glass in a circular motion, applying light to moderate pressure. Approximately three to five passes of the affected area may be required to remove the residue.
3. Rinse the glass surface immediately with generous amounts of clean water, removing the cleaning solution from the glass surface.
4. Using a squeegee or clean, lint-free dry cloth, remove water from the glass surface.
5. If glass residue is still evident, repeat steps or contact your Renewal by Andersen retail location for assistance.
CLEANING WITH POLISHING COMPOUNDS
For harsher contaminants and scratches, there are polishing compounds on the market; however, for marks and stains of this caliber we recommend that you contact your local Renewal by Andersen retailer and have their service professionals clean your windows. CAUTION: If misused, polishing components could damage your products.
"LEPTYNE" is a registered trademark of PPG Industries, Inc.

Can I install a window air conditioner unit in my new window?
Window-mounted air conditioners can be placed within a sash opening, however, they cannot rest on, be supported on, or be secured to the replacement window frame. It will be necessary to build a box or other support system around the window frame to hold the air conditioner.
Damage or modified components of any of our windows will not be covered under the manufacturer’s warranty. All other components such as glass, hardware, weatherstrip, frame, etc. would continue to be covered under the original manufacturer’s warranty for the coverages and durations specified.

Can I install a security system with my Renewal by Andersen® products?
Renewal by Andersen strongly recommends the use of remote sensors that do not require drilling into or penitatration of our windows and doors. If remote sensors are not a viable option, please consult with your Renewal by Andersen retail location before screwing into window or sash frames. If you choose to modify your windows with a security system, make sure screws are never used where they could interfere with operation, weatherstrip systems, or glazing (silicone). Damage to window from misplaced sensors or product modification is the responsibility of the homeowner and does not imply a product or material failure.

Can I install blinds with my Renewal by Andersen products?
We prefer that you do not install blinds directly to the product. If you do, you need to pre-drill the holes for fasteners (screws, not nails) and make sure that the screws penetrate the entire profile of the frame, but do not penetrate internal hardware or glass areas. Please note: Warranty coverage for any resulting damage during installation or after would not be covered. We strongly recommend working with your local Renewal by Andersen retail location who will be able to coach you on how to do this, if there isn't another alternative.
