3 International Projects Celebrating Earth Day

People Around the World Celebrate Earth Day

Since it was established in 1970, Earth Day has become a worldwide movement. Today we’d like to highlight a few international projects featured on www.EarthDay.org  that are working toward a more sustainable world.

Earth Day is on Wednesday, April 22nd and at our corporate headquarters we plan to celebrate with a booth in the common areas talking about our sustainability efforts and other green initiatives. We already did a spring trash pickup on the grounds, collecting 82 pounds of trash.

The Canopy Project is an organization that focuses on planting trees that help local communities (rather than large-scale forestry projects). Their focus is planting trees in hopes of providing food and income as well as helping reverse the impacts of land degradation. Tree cover prevents soil erosion during violent storms as well.

The Canopy Project is committed to planting 10 million trees over the next 5 years in impoverished areas around the world. In the past 3 years, the Canopy Project has planted over 1.5 million trees in 18 countries. That is definitely worth celebrating.

In India, the Earth Day Network is working on developing green spaces in miniature. Since major cities are overbuilt, organizers are leading initiatives to develop green concepts in urban spaces – like mounting containers to urban walls and growing plants in them. They will conduct training sessions to help citizens develop these ideas themselves.

Sometimes, it doesn’t even have to be that complicated. A college in Ecuador is hanging posters and reminding college students to turn off lights, help keep the beaches clean, recycle more often, and protect the rivers and Galapagos Islands.

Developing good habits when people are young and top of mind awareness are two of the keys to our planet’s future since it depends on good decisions we make every single day.  Thank you for celebrating Earth Day 2015 with us.
