8 Window Replacement Questions to Ask at Home Shows

While home shows can be a great way to discover new ways to tune up your home, they can also be overwhelming. If you come armed with the right questions, however, you can make sure you walk away with the knowledge you need to make an informed choice about your window replacement.

These eight window replacement questions will help you make the right decision for you and your home:

1.

What materials are used to make the window frame and sash?

There are numerous kinds of materials used – Is it wood? Vinyl? A composite material? For example, the Renewal by Andersen window sash are made with Fibrex® material, a composite of wood fibers blended with a polymer unique to Andersen Corporation.

2. How does this sash material compare to other sash and frame materials?

Be sure to ask how the materials perform in regards? to thermal expansion, stiffness, and thermal conductivity. Vinyl does not rot or decay, but it is not as strong or as stable as wood. That said, wood frames and sashes can rot if not properly maintained and may require maintenance over time. Fibrex® material from Renewal by Andersen combines the strength, insulating capability, and stability similar to wood, with the low maintenance features of vinyl.

3. What type of glass is used?

They type of glass used is an important part of your window functionality. Is the glass energy efficient and insulating? Does it provide UV protection? At Renewal by Andersen, our High-Performance Low-E4® glass is standard in all of our windows and is energy efficient in both winter and summer while blocking 84% of UV rays that can cause fading to the interior of your home. And we also have SmartSun™ glass which helps block even more of the sun’s harmful rays.

4. Do I have the right style of window for my home?

Does the company have the style of window to match your old windows? Or do they offer a new style you would like to use to replace your old windows? Do they have the materials and finishes you want to best suit your home’s look and style? Do they custom-manufacture each window to enable a precise fit for a more efficient seal? By asking these questions you will be closer to finding the best windows to fit your vision.

5. What is the energy efficiency of the window as whole? Does the window have an NFRC label?

The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC), is a third party organization providing product ratings for the window industry. One of the performance measurements is “U-Factor”. Lower U-Factors, indicate better insulation quality of a window. Be sure to look for the NFRC label to compare U-Factors and find the best insulated windows. For more information about whole unit performance ratings, visit http://www.nfrc.org/energy-performance-label/

6. Do the windows meet ENERGY STAR® performance criteria and labeled?

ENERGY STAR® is a special program created by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy to identify and promote energy-saving products and reduce greenhouse gas emissions . See www.energystar.gov for more information.

7. Is there a warranty for the entire window?

Be sure to obtain, carefully read, and understand what exactly is covered by any product warranty before you buy any windows. Many window replacement operations claim a lifetime warranty, but upon closer inspection the warranty may be limited to a number of  years, may not cover frame, sash, glass, or hardware problems, or neglects installation problems that can affect window performance. Be sure to ask “what if” questions about each warranty you review.

8What do I want in a replacement window?

This is a question you must ask yourself. Window replacement is a big investment, and one you’ll live with day in and day out for as long as you own your home. Think about the importance of appearance, performance, and durability before you choose.
