4 Earth Day Activities That Will You Feeling Green

Happy International Earth Day! Did you know that today is the largest worldwide civic event ever? Over a billion people worldwide participate in Earth Day activities every year!

You, too, can join in the celebrations, taking care of our planet and appreciating the Earth’s beauty. There are countless ways to get involved today, but here are a few suggestions to get you started:

  • Earth Day arts and crafts

There are entire websites, Pinterest boards, and forums dedicated to Earth-related crafts you can do with your friends and family. From coloring sheets to gardening, corn husk dolls to wind chimes made from recycled bottles and cans, these crafts are a great way to kick-start a conversation about conservation with those around you. Check out TinkerLab, Spoonful, and No Time for Flashcards for more ideas.

  • Local Earth Day activities

Most cities have events celebrating Earth Day. Search for activities happening near you, or visit the United States Environmental Protection Agency Earth Day page to find some events and volunteer opportunities in your area.

  • Spring cleaning

Nothing says eco-friendly like reuse and recycle. Eliminate clutter from your home with the focus of recycling your unwanted items, including clothing. Sell unwanted clothes and accessories, donate to local charities, or host a swap party with friends to make sure your unwanted items receive a second life instead of sitting in a landfill.

  • Update your home

Take time this Earth Day to look at your home with a critical eye trained for efficiency. The more environmentally responsible your home is, the more you save the Earth from unnecessary energy consumption. Consider LED light bulbs if you haven’t already made the switch. If you have a fireplace, check to see if it’s properly outfitted with dampers, doors, and fireplace inserts to reduce heat loss. Finally, spend some time studying your windows and doors. By installing energy efficient replacement windows, you can create a more energy- efficient home and help save money on energy bills, as well as helping out Mother Nature.
