Cottage Grove, Minn (September 15, 2008) — Renewal by Andersen, the start-to-finish window replacement subsidiary of Andersen Corporation, is pleased to announce it received Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) certification for two important elements: indoor air quality and recycled content.
Indoor Air Quality
Indoor air quality is an important issue because many people spend as much as 90% of their time indoors, either at home, work or school and poor indoor air quality can directly affect the health of its occupants.
Homeowners considering home improvement projects are increasingly interested in ensuring the products they install don’t degrade the indoor air quality of their home.
Some building materials can release toxins into the air through evaporation—a process called off-gassing. This evaporation can continue for years after the products are initially installed which means homeowners continue to breathe these chemicals as they sleep and relax in their home.
Renewal by Andersen is the only window replacement manufacturer to receive SCS Indoor Advantage™ Gold certification. This standard sets the toughest limits for indoor air emissions and guarantees that products contribute to a healthy and safe indoor environment.
The SCS Indoor Advantage Gold certification is based upon rigorous, peer-reviewed science and uses the health-based exposure limits required by the state of California for school children. This level of certification meets North America’s strictest indoor air emission criteria, namely the California Section 01350 Specification, the strictest emission standard in the US. Certified products meeting the CA 01350 specification are automatically accepted to other environmental rating programs, including LEED and CHPS.
Recycled Content
As natural resources are in limited supply, it is important to select products that are manufactured responsibly and incorporate recycled content.
Reclaimed material is an important component to the construction of Renewal by Andersen® windows. The windows are made from the company’s Fibrex® framing material, a sustainable composite that blends the best attributes of wood fibers and polymer—much of the wood fibers reclaimed directly from manufacturing plant operations.
SCS verified Fibrex material used in Renewal by Andersen® windows to contain 40 percent reclaimed wood fiber by weight, and the glass used in Renewal by Andersen® windows to contain minimum of 12 percent recycled glass by weight. The result is Renewal by Andersen windows have achieved the highest SCS certified recycled content of any replacement window manufacturer.
“This certification is a testament to our environmental commitment and sustainable practices,” said Tim Reimann, Renewal by Andersen Director of Research, Development and Innovation.” Certification of Renewal by Andersen products allows us to demonstrate our ability to meet the needs of homeowners looking for recycled content and positive indoor air quality.”
